Digital Fabrication: Shells with Thin Sheet Materials

The shell with thin sheet material is a structural experiment of an innovative structure concept -- the cellular cavity structure. The design and generation of the structure concept follows the advanced structure design method based on the material performance. It enables the simple fabrication and assembly process of a large-span shell structure with super thin material.
The whole structure is built with 179 cellular elements, fabricated by only 1mm paperboard. The geometry of the shell is defined by the state-of-the-art form-finding technique to get the global equilibrium state and the local stability is enhanced by the membranes of the cavity form.
