Riverside Space of Pengyuepu Road (Wenshui Road -- Guangzhongxi Road)
Pengpu Town in Jing'an District is named after Pengyuepu River. The river witnessed so many floods that people living by it raised funds to build a temple for “Lord Pengyue” hoping that the powerful lord in West Han Dynasty could tame the violent river. Hence the name “Pengyuepu”. The Pengyue Temple flourished as a popular shrine and eventually became a market called “Templeside”. Pengyuepu River ranges from Zoumatang in the north and Suzhou Creek in the south, with a length of 6.2 kilometers. The waterfront green belt section is 3.7 kilometers long and located in the center of Pengpu Town, running through the north and south of the town. Since the rectification of small and medium-sized rivers in Shanghai, the water quality of Pengyuepu River and the waterfront environment have undergone significant improvements, and it has been rated as the first “River Beauty” of Shanghai. After the river regulation and the “Five Violations and Four Necessaries” in 2017, all industrial plants and 51,620 m2 of illegal buildings were removed while a central green belt, 10m wide on both banks of Puyue River, was built. In the summer of 2018, the model section of riverside green belt was completed and opened to the public. With trails, greening and convenient facilities, the city's water-friendly walking space and urban vitality nodes, which are continuously connected on both sides of the river, are of exemplary significance.
