    Exhibition Introduction

As city develops and renews itself, fragmented public spaces and resources will always reach a dynamic equilibrium. Shanghai Study Center, The University of Hongkong decides to teach design and study cities using the idea of “Residual Space” while observing on a continual basis how the spaces, landscapes and communities in central Shanghai, especially waterfronts, has developed. And “City Metamorphosis: Renewal of Waterfront Space, Landscape and Community” demonstrates the educational and academic efforts devoted to the Bund and elsewhere in Hongkou District by Shanghai Study Center. Urban form, history, cultural comparative study, business form, consciousness of individual residents, social issues will be discussed from the perspective of built environment, channeling history, culture, art and current spatial contexts. The exhibition will be integrated into the development of waterfront Shanghai as a public art project by Suzhou Creek. The exhibited projects and studies on three levels – city, community, landscape – will invite citizens to explore the developmental possibilities of Asian waterfronts.
