The sub-district (community) of Second Ruijin Road is located at the midwestern part of Huangpu District. Its jurisdiction of about 1.95 km2 consists of 16 resident committees and has a population of about 52,900. In 2020, Huangpu District carried out the research project “Master Action Plan for the 15-minute Community Life Circle in the Sub-districts of Second Ruijin Road and Middle Huaihai Road” which, based on a total-factor evaluation of the communities, proposed the planning strategies for community services/facilities, that is, Three Sharings, Intensive Hybridity and Precise Implementation. The sub-district of Second Ruijin Road intends to beautify its habitual environment through the with “Three Beautifuls” Plan (Beautiful Sceneries, Beautiful Homes and Beautiful Streets), improve business and office spaces to enhance and expand employment, optimize the layout of facilities and refine community services; and to provide better sceneries and walking experiences in connection with the project of “burying overhead cables”, exploit scattered micro-spaces for leisure and public activities, and create a distinct cultural brand with its unique resources.

The Huangpu section of Nanchang Road is part of Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical Scenic Area. The road of about 1,600m starts from South Chongqing Road and stretches west until South Shaanxi Road. The area is home to many Shanghainese buildings and historical sites which carry the memories of Shanghai, constituting a distinct humanistic memory and historical marking. Led by the planning of Community Life Circle, Nanchang Road has gradually become an exemplar block characterized by openness, sharing, ecology and vitality. Through efforts in multiple dimensions, it has become a typical community featuring fine-grained administration and grass-root governance unique to Huangpu and a beautiful place where spaces, art and life are perfectly harmonious, satisfying the demands of all ages for high-quality community life in a 24/7 manner.

Curatorial Program

Centering around the concept of “Building the 15-minute Community Life Circle”, the SUSAS 2021 Exhibition at Huangpu chooses Nanchang Road as the key site of community building with the theme of Soul Connection——The True Ruijin Lifestyle. The event proposes four strategies – Memories of Culture and History, Principle of Intensiveness, Perspective of Science-Art Integration, Encourage Community Residents to Participate – and the methods of “soul realism”. The activities take multiple forms including crowdsourcing for designs and art curation.

The exhibition aims to continue the lifestyle projects in Nanchang Road, relive its distinctively spiritual and cultural temperament, and increase the residents’ senses of belonging and happiness. The SUSAS event will be opened by a Lawn Concert and a photography competition will be carried out throughout the SUSAS season, amplifying our voices with art so that more citizens will join our activities. At the same time, with the standards of “Five Suitables” as the central guiding principle, the events will be embedded into and enhance community-based activities to customize holistically atmosphere featuring elegant streets, diversified activities and leisure veins, and create together a street of warmth, sentiments and cultures.
