Project Introduction

The Yueyang road in Tianping Street, Xuhui district is situated at the south end of Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Landscape, which is a Class 1 preservation road. Tianping Street Community lies in the northeast of Xuhui District, bordering South Shaanxi Road (East), Tianping Street and Huashan Road (West), Zhaojiabang Road (South), Middle Huaihai Road and Middle Fuxing Road (North). The 26,800 m2 area contains multiple Class 1 preservation roads, protected historical and cultural sites, and excellent historical buildings, making it one of the representative region of West sector of Shanghai French Concession. The cultural and historical landscapes are organically integrated with the blocks thanks to the methodology of “micro renewal, micro improvement and micro design” and the long-term, stage-wise implementation. In the organic renewal process, the project aims to create “readable” buildings, pedestrian-friendly blocks, and make Tianping Community a warm place that fully demonstrates the charm of Xuhui District.

Theme Interpretation

The 2017 “Design for Landscape” Yueyang Road Site Project highlights efforts to protect, utilize and regenerate historical sectors and intangible heritages of Shanghai, which is a national famous historical and cultural city in China.TheYueyang road in Tianping Street, Xuhui district is situated at the south end of Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Landscape, one of the oldest in the West Sector of Shanghai French Concession. The concept of this exhibition is “history, landscape, culture and art”. As an important place for people to perceive and understand historical landscapes, Yueyang Road public space is the focus and miniature of Shanghainese history and culture. The integration of old and new, flexible expansion, as well as the representa- tion of tradition and contemporary in Yueyang road directly reflect the conflicts between historical and landscape transformation and tradition extension, which embodies great aesthetic and academic significance for contemporaries. Photography and music exhibitions show the uniqueness of historical landscape and endow us with shaper eyes towards the past. The “Urban Environment Music Week” brings new extension and depth to the city and present every street and community with emerging culture and technology so as to activate and revive the traditional Shanghainese community culture. History & Culture Exhibition and Celebrities of Tianping Street offer a perfect combination of historical figures and city heritages, which extend the charm of streets and communities. It is our focus to find a way to properly integrate the enhancement of historical landscape and regeneration of city culture, and create opportunities where city landscape and historical culture meet and communicate.
