Brand Introduction
As never-fading memories of its residents, icons epitomize, inherit and carry on the culture of a city. Shanghai, with its history of over seven centuries, boasts a variety of icons, which constitute an organic part of Shanghainese culture and the indispensable spiritual backbone for its progress.
Hosted by Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, “Iconic Shanghai” focuses on the historical landscapes of the city. The serial events creatively adopts the “crowd funding” model that combines curated exhibition, art work production and public participation, and are thus positively received. A refreshing example is the Shanghai Shikumen Cultural Tour that brings the researches of Prof. RuanYisan, works of famous cartoonist He Youzhi, “Mr. Shikumen” Li Shoubai, and survey reports about Lilong lanes of teachers and students of Tongji University. In a hall of 1,000m2, “When Art Meets Hudec” (2016) employed nearly 20 forms of arts, nearly 30 items, works created by almost a hundred artists to offer a profession- al, innovative, thoughtful exhibition that embodied the humanistic spirit of Shanghai. Laszlo Ede Hudec, a Hungarian who worked in Shanghai during 1920s and 1930s, thus became an Internet celebrity in China of the 21st century.
Targeting
In 2017, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government issued Some Suggestions on the Administration of Planning Work for Preservation-of-Historical-Look Streets (Alleys/Lanes) in This Municipality; ten years ago, the list of “streets banned from expansion” was published. Echoing these events, Iconic Shanghai 2017 focuses on “Streets”, the constructions that embody the personality, energy, history of this city, and are closely connected with citizens’ life. Carrying on the established feature “take urban landscape heritage as core theme, promote contemporary thinking with art creation, corroborate development concept with preservation cases, demonstrate the city’s charm with works of its resident, and consolidate the city’s spirits with public participation”, Iconic Shanghai 2017 emphasizes diversity, or tries to reflect the perceptions, perspectives and efforts of various group concerning the city’s history and preservation.
